Mostly Ash for bodies and heads, and slices (Wreaths and Snowmen). We also use Silver Birch, Oak, Spruce, amongst others. All are cut from sustainable forests in Ireland.
Legs and Antlers, come from a variety of sources, including Ash Hazel, Beech, Beam, Holly, Spruce, Pine.
Like all us as we get older we get wrinkles!
Soaking it in water or leaving it out over a period of heavy rain should temporally close the split, depending on where it is and how far through the log it is.
The split will appear again as the moisture from the log evaporates.
Storing and placing outside in a damp environment will slow the process down. A finish such as varnish, lacquer or PVA/Water solution applied to the cut areas of the product may reduce this further. Any finish applied should be done within the first few days of purchase.
Typically if placed outside during the winter and stored correctly during the remainder of the year you could get 2 or 3 seasons. It is all down to environmental factors though and you should expect to see splitting or cracking in maybe three months, this is a natural process and the speed and amount cannot not be forecast. It will depend on
1. The type of wood used.
2. How large the exposed/cut area is (expect more cracking with larger reindeer).
3. The area where It is placed/stored.
4. if you treated the wood after purchase
Think of a cut Christmas tree, left by a fire it will turn brown and loose its needles in a number or days/weeks, leave it outside and it will last a number of months.
